Field Notes: Recent reports from towns caught up in Sprawl-Busting Battles
Here's a sampling of recent communications from towns fighting big box retailers:
ELLENWOOD, GEORGIA: The town of Ellenwood is located in the unincorporated section of North Henry County, GA. Henry County is the now the third fastest growing county in the U.S. Not only are residents flocking to this area, but so are retail giants. The giant we are facing is a Wal-mart. It is literally trying to locate in the heart of a residential area (actually directly across the street from two subdivisions), however more than 40 subdivisions or so will be affected. Most citizens don't want it hear but we are fighting government officials who don't live in the area but feel that it would be good for the economy. We have requested a town hall meeting with the Board of Commissioners, Thursday, May 20, 2004 to address our concerns. This proposal is expected to go before the Planning & Zoning Commission, Thursday, June 10, 2004.
ENGLEWOOD, COLORADO: We recently found out that Shea Homes is selling land to Wal Mart for a Super Center right behind our home. As you can appreciate my neighbors and myself were horrified by the news, We do not want a Wal Mart in oure neighborhood! I have seen a lot of coverage on the news regarding battles in the Thornton, Colorado area.
PLOVER, WISCONSIN: As of May 7th 2004, walmart has expressed interest in building a new super center near the center of Wisconsin! I live in a community(Wisconsin Rapids) which has had a super center since 2000. We are about 20 min from the proposed site! We dont need another walmart in central wisconsin to push out more of themuch needed jobs. The jobs to be created are low paying and worthless. We need Info/facts and people to help stand against this common move of Walmart. There has never been a anti walmart movement in central Wisconsin.
SUWANEE, GEORGIA: We just found out that a Super Walmart is going to try and break ground next week. The land was zoned 10 years ago before subdivisions were built around the land. It will back up to a subdivision with 700 homes and face a subdivsion on the other side of the street. It will also be on a two-lane road that is already overcrowded and will not be a 4-lane road until 2007
TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA: The next City Council Meeting regarding concerns about Walmart moving into our area, specifically Exit 220 across the street from South Lake Elementary School is May 11th at 630pm at City Hall, 2nd floor. This is a neighborhood -- not a heavy commercial area. They already lease their original location in St John's Plaza and have another Walmart less than 5 miles away. Traffic along Garden Street and the access to I-95 will come to a halt two times each day due to the school zone. Would you want your children crossing traffic at the current Walmart on SR-50? This entire parcel is the water recharge area for the main Titusville well fields. Less water means higher rates. Building on this parcel will destroy wildlife habitat: gopher tortoises, bald eagles, ospeys, red foxes, hawks, indigo snakes and native plants. Please join us on May 11th at City Hall at 630pm. We need to SEE numbers and "SAY NO TO WALMART EXIT 220 Titusville."
