View Royal,Victoria British Columbia

The town of View Royal has turned down a Home Depot proposal. At a recent town Council meeting, the vote was 24 people against Home Depot, 7 in favor. The Council voted to uphold the zoning committee's recommendation that Home Depot not be given permission to build. The developer told residents that the landowners were prepared to donate up to 4 acres of land to the town to create a park at no cost to the town. He also claimed that Home Depot would create a net gain of 250 new jobs, and that Home Depot would not eliminate jobs in Greater Victoria. They also offered to make "a significant donation towards an enlarged community gymnasium facility" at the local elementary school. "Do you want to say no to a new community centre for the youth of View Royal that is substantially paid for by private funds"? the developer asked. The developer even said that the Home Depot was not going to be a big box, but would be a "heritage tudor style building" instead. View Royal still said no. And the developer responded: "This is not going to go away. Sooner or later, Home Depot will be in Victoria."

What you can do: If your town would like a new gymnasium, or municipal building, or athletic field, or bandshell, please forward your requests directly to Home Depot, 2727 Paces Ferry Road, Atlanta, GA 30339-4089. You can fax your requests to: 770-431-2707. Be sure to indicate the size of the facility you want, and any color scheme you wish to specify.
