Newark, DE. Home Depot Slam-Dunked In First Hearing

There was very little doubt about how the Planning Commission in Newark, Delaware felt about Home Depot's plans to build a large store in this small town. This week the Commission voted unanimously against the Atlanta-based retailer. A Home Depot opponent sent the following report from behind enemy lines: "After tonight, we're half-way there to keeping out Home Depot. We got petitions signed and lobbied council members and asked for local advice. It helped by simply pestering the Delaware Department of Transportation with questions on traffic. The Home Depot figured
only 13 acres in their traffic study, versus a total development of the 40 acres in question. The Planning Commission heard even from Home Depot customers on the virtues of our town and other variables. The Commission then voted 6-0 against the Depot proposal, and now it goes to the City council, which has final say. I've always stated that I felt that we had a better chance with council based on emotions than planning, but we're pumped! People came out of the woodwork to show up for this hearing. The Home Depot reps looked stunned, based on the fact they roll through other Delaware communities. One more step to go!"

What you can do: I always caution citizen's groups that "it ain't over 'till the fat company sings. Many a planning board vote has been overturned by the city council. So residents in Newark, Deleware need to pack the hearing room when the Home Depot plan is heard, because you can be sure the company is busy twisting political arms as hard as it can.
